Questions for a Potential Therapist

It’s 2025, and lets get one thing straight- everyone should have access to a therapist. If you are looking to start therapy- there are some questions that might come in handy to help find you someone you align with well. A therapist is someone you spend a lot of time with, and who is getting to know the deep intricacies of how you work. So finding someone that aligns well with you helps those aspects of therapy become easier and more comfortable than finding any random clinician to try.

These questions are to get more in depth understanding of what may or may not work for you when looking for a therapist. Additionally, filtering for demographics you find important to you (eg. location, availability, insurance, age, life experience, race, gender, etc) are also things to reflect on when looking for a therapist.

  1. How would you summarize your style of therapy?

  2. Do you accept my insurance plan _____?

  3. When it comes to scheduling, what are your policies?

  4. Do you have experience working with _____ and what are some ways you have helped people with ______?

  5. From sharing a bit about what I am looking for support with, do you think I may be a good fit for therapy with you?

While not every clinician provides a free 15 minute phone call option like I do, a green flag is if these questions are answered well and within the preferences you are looking for with services. If you do not feel like their answers align with what you are looking for, there are many other therapists in the world to choose from!
