Packing for College? Here are some Therapist Approved Essentials

If you happen to be part of the world that has officially committed to a college and are getting ready for welcome events this coming summer- you might be starting to put together your packing list. There are so many changes that come with transitioning to college, and one big part of that is mental health. When we go through any change in life, good, bad or in-between, there is loss. The loss of the routines, people, places, and things we are used to. While that can also be a positive aspect of going off to college, it can be overwhelming at times. So this article highlights some “therapist approved” essentials to keep wellness in mind while you start your next chapter of life.

  • Emotional Support Water Bottle: You may already have this on your packing list & if so- awesome! Having a water bottle means you are more likely to look at it and drink- staying hydrated helps your memory retention, nervous system regulation, and other physiological aspects of mental health.

  • A journal: There are so many ways to journal today, even Apple came out with a journal app for the iPhone recently. Having a physical or digital journal and then setting a scheduled time you can write in it is also a great item to bring to college. Sometimes in the business of college, students have to decrease how often they see their therapist. Journaling can also help you reflect on ideas, thoughts or symptoms you want to reflect with your therapist when you do get the time to meet.

  • Resources: What I mean by this is- have you checked out your campus student support center? All schools have some form of student support center, with resources such as: study tips, career counseling, school clubs, mental health support, and disability services. If you have knowledge of this before you get to school. you can reach out when you need support.

  • Phone Numbers: As I mentioned above, most schools have a peer support or counseling line- add it to your phone! You can also get a sticker for the Crisis Lifeline which is 988 in case you need it. Having numbers like the counseling center, health department, and any other important campus resources related to your specific needs is a great way to have it at the ready when/if you need it.

  • Noise Cancelling Headphones: Music and soundscapes can be very supportive to our mental health and processing emotions. Having headphones on hand can be helpful for studying, relaxing, creating a non-physical boundary, and having alone time.

  • Essential Oil or Perfume: When we get overwhelmed, a mini-mindfulness trick is to softly inhale a scent that brings you comfort & relaxes your nervous system. A good example is Whole Foods sells a lavender scent roller that’s $7 near the cash register. Keeping that on hand for moment when you start to feel anxious, overwhelmed, or panicky can be helpful. Always check in with your personal therapist for options that are personalized to you.

  • Items that Remind You of Home: If the home you are leaving has been a place of comfort to you, then bring some items that help you feel at home. Our brains do not like change, and if there are certain items like a pillow, stuffed animal, blanket, poster (some people aren’t allowed to have wall art), pictures, or other things you feel comfortable bringing with you to college can help it feel less SUPER new and more “slightly” new.
