A Note to Therapy Newbies

If you happen to be starting your mental health journey in the next few months- I am so excited for you! It is a brave step to try therapy. Being open to mental health support isn’t something everyone has the courage to do.

So while you are at an early stage of this hard work- here is some points we hope resonate with you:

  • Have patience, the process of therapy isn’t something you can force.

  • Just because you don’t make a “breakthrough” every session doesn’t mean it isn’t meaningful.

  • Trust takes time, even with a professional therapist. Don’t push yourself unless it feels safe.

  • There are therapists of many styles. If your current one isn’t working, let them know & get referrals.

  • If you are in couples therapy, think about having an individual therapist as well. Having that one on one support can be helpful while navigating your relationship.

  • Consistency outside of sessions is your key to create lasting change.

  • You are doing the best you can.

  • Let go of any expectation you have on the process of therapy. It is a new path you are walking, we cannot see the future.

Some of these points might not even make sense to you yet and that is okay. As you can see the gist is this- give yourself grace during your wellness journey. It is difficult to look inward when we are so often taught not to. It can be uncomfortable, challenging, painful, and…. freeing.

If you are still looking for a therapist that fits you, feel free to contact me or you can find options on search engines such as Psychology Today, Therapy Den, Open Path, and Multicultural Therapists.

Please note this is all based on our personal perspective, and therefore is not everything! If these tips don’t work for you, that is okay. We are all so unique and what we write in these blogs aren’t going to fit everyone’s life styles.
